What a boiler repair costs with RJL
We publish our prices. One number covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first half hour of repair work.
Many straightforward faults are fixed inside that first half hour. If a part has to be ordered and we come back to fit it, the second visit is charged at the labour rate plus the part, with no second call-out fee. Every price is confirmed with you before the work is done.

Fixed first time, wherever we can. Our engineers carry the commonly needed parts on the van, and we work with several wholesalers across South East London and Kent so that parts we do not carry are usually available the same or next day. That is how most repairs are finished on the first visit.
Boiler problems we fix every week
Usually a failed ignition, a stuck diverter valve, a faulty pump or a dead thermostat. Most of these are a same-visit fix.
Almost always a small leak on the system, a weeping pressure relief valve or a tired expansion vessel. Topping it up every week is a symptom, not a solution.
A leak from the casing points to a pump seal, a pressure valve or a corroded heat exchanger. Turn the boiler off and call us.
Kettling from limescale on the heat exchanger, air in the system, or a pump on its way out. Noises get worse, not better.
Sludge in the system or a balancing problem. If the boiler itself is healthy, a power flush is the fix, and we do those too.
On older boilers a thermocouple; on newer ones an ignition lead, electrode or gas valve.

Combi, system or conventional, we repair most gas boilers. We also repair warm air heating units and LPG boilers, which many heating firms will not touch. Gas is our bread and butter, but the same engineers know warm air and LPG. If your boiler is still under the manufacturer's warranty, tell us: some faults should be claimed through them first, and we will say so rather than charge you.
Repair or replace?
We repair far more boilers than we replace. A repair is the right call when the boiler is under about twelve years old, parts are available and the fault is a single component. We will suggest replacement only when the repair bill is heading towards a third of the cost of a new boiler, or when the same fault keeps coming back.
If replacement is the answer: we quote it there and then at a discounted rate, the diagnosis fee you have already paid comes off the installation price, and quotes for a new boiler are free.

Emergency boiler repairs
We are not a 24-hour call centre and we will not pretend to be one. What we promise is a response to every breakdown within 24 hours or the next business day, with homes that have no heating or hot water seen first.
If you smell gas, do not call us first. Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999, open windows and leave the property.

Questions people ask before they call
How quickly can you get to me?
Within 24 hours, or the next business day at the latest. Same-day in much of our area if you call in the morning. We tell you which when you call, not after.
Do you charge for a quote?
Diagnosing a fault needs an engineer on site, so the £100 + VAT call-out applies, and it includes the first half hour of repair work. The rest of the repair is quoted before it is done, and you can say no. Quotes for a new boiler, a bathroom or larger plumbing work are free.
Is it worth repairing an old boiler?
Often, yes. A fifteen-year-old boiler with a failed pump is a pump replacement, not a new boiler. The time to replace is when parts are no longer made, when efficiency has fallen so far that the gas bill is the real cost, or when it has broken down more than once in a winter. We will give you our honest view on site, and if replacement is the answer, the diagnosis fee comes off the price.
My boiler is still under warranty. Should I call you or the manufacturer?
Check your warranty first. If the fault is covered, the manufacturer will send their own engineer at no cost. If it is not covered, or the boiler is out of warranty, call us.
What if the part has to be ordered?
Most common parts are on the van. If one has to be ordered, we make the boiler safe, order the part that day from one of our wholesalers, and come back to fit it. The return visit is labour and the part only, with no second call-out fee.
